Treatment for Corneal Disease

Dry Eye Center of New York specializes in treatment for Corneal Disease and all disorders related to the surface of the eye. We try to optimize the outer layers of the eye in order to produce a more comfortable and better functioning eye.

There are many external disorders of the eye including:

Pterygium / Pinguecula

These are growths that cover the inner white parts of the eye caused by UV-sunlight and can easily be excised as an outpatient procedure.

Cornea edema / swelling

The clear tissue in front of the iris is called the cornea. In certain conditions like Fuch’s Dystrophy, Bullous Keratopathy after cataract surgery, this tissue becomes swollen and causes blurry vision. A corneal transplant can be performed in 1 hour as an outpatient procedure with a 90% success rate.

Other conditions which call for treatment for Corneal Disease

Keratoconus

The cornea is usually shaped like a ball but in people with this condition it is usually shaped like a football. This distorts the vision because of irregular astigmatism. Most of the time your vision can be corrected with hard contact lenses, but in some who are intolerant to lenses or have a resulting scar, they will require a corneal transplant.

Corneal Ulcers

A corneal ulcer is an infection within the cornea usually due to extended wear contact lenses or trauma. Most can be effectively managed with an appropriate topical antibiotic.

Persistent epithelial defects

This occurs when the skin of the eye does not heal. They can occur after a history of trauma, in diabetics, people with a eye stem cell deficiency, herpes infection, or in a epithelial dystrophy. They can be managed with contact lenses, laser therapy, amniotic membrane transplants, partial eyelid closure procedures, and stem cell transplants all of which are simple outpatient procedures.

Refractive surgery for myopia / hyperopia with astigmatism

PRK / LASEK surgery involves scraping only the skin off of the eye with a blunted instrument (no blades) followed by a custom laser procedure. Studies have shown that this procedure as opposed to LASIK causes significantly less dryness post-surgery and possibly even a better outcome in low to moderate cases. Dr Icasiano performs all the refractive and cataract surgery in the office.
